Choosing the right location is such an important part of creating photos that feel natural, beautiful, and true to you. Columbia has so many beautiful photography locations for sessions, but sometimes the best choice is right where you already are. Here are my favorite options for both families and couples:
In-Home Sessions
In-home sessions will always be my top recommendation. There’s something irreplaceable about photographing your family where you actually live life; your favorite chair by the window, your toddler’s toys scattered across the floor, the way your dog curls up at your feet. Home sessions allow you to feel completely yourself, and the images reflect that intimacy and comfort in a way no outdoor space can. That said, sometimes home isn’t an option, or it’s fun to change things up. When that’s the case, Columbia has some truly beautiful settings to explore.
Stephens Lake Park
Stephens Lake Park is one of my go-to locations because of its variety and openness. There are fields, creeks, and massive oak trees that give every session a different look depending on where we explore. It’s well maintained year-round, and especially gorgeous in autumn when the leaves turn and in summer when the greens are vibrant. The wide, open spaces also mean we can find a little corner that feels private; perfect for families who want space for kids to play, or couples who want a quiet setting that still feels lush and lively.

Rock Bridge State Park (Beyond Devil’s Icebox)
While Rock Bridge is well known for Devil’s Icebox, one of my favorite spots is actually just off the main entrance in the spring. Bluebell flowers bloom to the left of the path, creating a soft, colorful setting that feels whimsical (extra special for littles). It’s a beautiful area for little ones to explore and for families to share cozy, playful moments together. Couples also love the quiet paths here; they set the tone for images that feel intimate and organic without distraction.
Twin Lakes Dog Park & Nearby MKT Trail
Twin Lakes offers more than just a spot for pups to run. Behind the park, there’s a secluded hill with a big tree and wide open space. It’s the kind of backdrop that feels both simple and elevated, sky, grass, and light working together to create editorial-style images. Just across the MKT Trail, there’s also plenty of room to wander and find a sense of quiet. Whether it’s families chasing the last light of the day or couples wanting to feel completely tucked away, Twin Lakes offers space and freedom for photos that feel grounded and personal.
Shelter Gardens
Shelter Gardens is one of Columbia’s most photogenic locations thats in town. With landscaped flower beds, stone paths, and quiet garden nooks, it has a refined and romantic feel that works beautifully for couples, families, or milestone sessions. In spring and summer, the blooms add soft color and texture, while the gardens stay green and peaceful throughout the year.
Why These Spaces Work
Each of these Columbia locations offers something unique; whether it’s the intimacy of home, Stephens Lake’s variety, Rock Bridge’s seasonal blooms, or the secluded simplicity of Twin Lakes. They all invite presence, play, and connection, which is what makes them so special for family sessions and engagement sessions. By choosing a space that feels comfortable and true to you, your images will naturally reflect the joy, intimacy, and authenticity of your story.
